Symposium | 21st Annual Midwest Cardiovascular-Thoracic Symposium 

Welcome to the OSF Saint Francis Heart Hospital Symposium! The 21st Annual Midwest Cardiovascular-Thoracic Symposium will be held Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Embassy Suites, East Peoria, Illinois (Map & Directions). This year's symposium, "The Cardiovascular & Cardiothoracic Puzzle," is designed to provide healthcare professionals with an interest in cardiovascular and/or cardiac issues the most current information to promote the delivery of quality patient care. It is intended for all hospital and office based healthcare professionals who work with these patient populations.

$55 OSF Cardiac Network member hospital staff and affiliated physician office staff
$75 Non-­member
$25 Undergraduate Nursing Students with proof of enrollment in an accredited Nursing Program
Symposium fee includes all conference materials, contact hours, breakfast, lunch and refreshment breaks.

Registration Deadline:
The registration deadline is Monday, Oct. 17, 2011.

Cancellation Policy:
Oct. 24, 2011 and before: full refund. Oct. 25, 2011 and after: no refund.

Speakers

Michael Tarantino, MD received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1987, after which he completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in 1990 and a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the University of Wisconsin in 1993. He is considered a national and international thought leader in the areas of hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, thrombophilia, primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and other platelet disorders.

Richard Anderson, MD received his doctorate in medicine and completed his surgical internship at the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. His residency in general surgery was completed at the University of Illinois, College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP) and completed a fellowship program in thoracic surgery at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Anderson specializes in thoracic surgery including pulmonary resection, esophageal surgery, and minimally invasive thoracic surgery.

Shannon Foiles, APN has been a nurse for 15 years and for the past 7 years has been practicing as the Thoracic Surgery APN on the Cardiothoracic Step¬Down Unit for the OSF Saint Francis Thoracic Center. She has also published articles of this patient population. Shannon currently serves as chairperson of the OSF PNC APN Committee.

Keattiyoat “Top” Wattanakit, MD, MPH graduated with his medical degree from Chicago Medical School in Illinois. He holds a Master's of Public Health (MPH) degree in epidemiology and completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Minnesota. He has completed multiple fellowships in a variety of cardiovascular specialties. He currently specializes in consultative cardiology; arterial, venous, and lymphatic diseases; clotting disorders; vascular medicine; cardiac CT and MRI diagnostic imaging.

Timir Baman, MD received his medical degree from Pennsylvania State College of Medicine. He completed residency in Internal Medicine at University of Chicago Hospitals in Illinois and completed fellowship in Division of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Division of Cardiology at University of Michigan Hospitals. Dr. Baman specializes in cardiac electrophysiology, arrhythmia management, radiofrequency ablation, including ablation for atrial fibrillation, pacemaker and defibrillator implantation and management.

Jennifer Ash, MD graduated from Southern Illinois University and pursued a surgical residency at University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP). She continued her education in vascular and endovascular surgery through a fellowship at SIU School of Medicine. She specializes in open and minimally invasive arterial and venous surgeries, thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery, stent implantation, carotid artery surgery and stent implantation, minimally invasive varicose vein treatment, and uterine fibroid therapy and embolization.

Carol Koch, RN has worked in the intensive care unit since she began her career in 1973. She became a clinical nurse educator in 1991. She has experience with the adult and pediatric postoperative patient. She has taught numerous classes including temporary pacing, rhythm recognition, components of cardiac output, components of oxygen delivery, SVO2 monitoring, intra¬aortic balloon pumping, and valvular heart disease.

Tammy C. Sarmiento, CNP received her diploma in nursing from OSF Saint Francis School of Nursing, acquiring her BSN from Saint Francis College of Nursing and her MSN from University of Illinois. She obtained a Post Master’s Certificate in Hospice and Palliative Care Nursing in 2011. The majority of her nursing experience surrounds caring for patients and families dealing with cardiac disease in the acute care setting. She began working in Palliative Care in January 2008 taking a leadership role in the development of an Adult Palliative Care Consultation Service at OSF.

Brian Curtis, MD went to medical school at Creighton University School of Medicine Omaha, Nebraska. He completed his residency at University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP). He practices internal medicine and pediatrics in Peoria, Illinois.

Barry Clemson, MD, FACC received his M.D. from Thomas Jefferson University. He completed his internship, residency, and fellowship at Pennsylvania State University, Hershey Medical Center. He then joined the medical school faculty where he advanced to be medical director of the heart failure and transplant program before joining HeartCare Midwest in 1993. He serves as medical director for the Heart Failure Clinic at HeartCare Midwest and the Heart Failure Management Program at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

Ashley Simper, MS, RD, LDN has worked as the community and outpatient dietitian at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois for the past 4 ½ years. She received her undergraduate education in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics from Bradley University and completed her Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology at Illinois State University. Ashley received the 2010 Illinois Dietetic Association, Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year Award.

Karen Bussone, RN, MS, CACNP completed her nursing education at Illinois Central College, her bachelor program at Bradley University, and her masters program at University of Illinois¬Chicago. She has held various leadership roles in her nursing career and since 2005 she has been a Nurse Practitioner for HeartCare Midwest.

Rose Haisler, DO completed Medical School at the University of North Texas HSC at Fort Worth, Texas and the College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency at University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP) Emergency Medicine Program. Since 2004, she has served at the Emergency Medicine Attending Physician for OSF Saint Francis and OSF Saint James. She is also the Medical Director for Life Flight, and Core Faculty for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program.
